Apprenticeship Overview

Apprenticeship is a "Learn as you Work" opportunity offered by government Apprenticeship departments in Alberta and other Canadian Provinces. Locksmith Apprenticeship is a fully indentured 4-year program. A person employed by a Journeyman Locksmith can enroll in the Apprenticeship system and qualify for low-cost Apprenticeship training sessions at RDC. The components of Apprenticeship are:

  • On-the-job training under the supervision of a Journeyman Locksmith
  • 8-week technical training sessions, on-campus (4 sessions in all), or online training supplemented with on-campus practical instruction
  • Progressive exams, administered by Alberta Apprenticeship (to be completed immediately after each session).

In addition, Apprentices qualify for Employment Insurance and Student Finance benefits while attending on-campus technical training sessions. RDC delivers the technical training component. Apprenticeship enrollment, work experience logging, progressive exams and technical training schedules are all administered by Alberta Apprenticeship. Please also note that RDC does not place students in employment.
