Award-winning author and translator Susan Ouriou to speak at RDC Library
Red Deer, November 10, 2011 – RDC invites you to an evening with award-winning fiction writer and literary translator, Susan Ouriou, on Wednesday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the
North Nook of the College Library.
Ouriou will speak about her late daughter Katie's book, Love Ya Like a Sister. The book is a collection of emails and letters Katie wrote to her friends during what was to be a year's sabbatical in France with the family. After only three months overseas, Katie died suddenly at the age of 16 from a rare form of leukemia.
For years after Katie's death, Ouriou worked as a volunteer with grief groups and saw the power of both words and community in action, something Katie always knew and brought to life through vivid and often hilarious conversation, emails and letters.
Ouriou is an award-winning fiction writer and literary translator. Her first novel, Damselfish, was short-listed for the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Best Book Award and the Writers Guild of Alberta Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction. Short-listed twice for Canada's Governor General's Literary Award for Translation, she won the prestigious award in 2009 for Pieces of Me by Charlotte Gingras.
The evening is made possible in part through the financial support of the CAT Fund, administered by the RDC Students’ Association. Snacks will be served and admission to the evening is free.
