Local Radio Station Contributes in a Big Way to RDC Music Students

Red Deer, November 14, 2011 – RDC Music students have just received a lasting contribution from a local radio station. Red Deer’s 100.7FM The River (Harvard Broadcasting Inc.) has committed $160,000 to RDC students over the next 7 years. This generous donation will create an endowment, meaning future scholarships will be available for students through the interest on the endowment principle.

The River’s donation will endow the Harvard Broadcasting Music Excellence Endowment. This will provide Music program students the opportunity for one of five $1000 annual awards. The receiving student must exemplify outstanding achievement or progress in private music lessons, as well as demonstrate outstanding contributions to the RDC Music Ensembles. Those who meet the criteria and prove financial hardships will be given preference.

“We are honored that 100.7FM The River has chosen to invest locally, in RDC students,” says Dr. Dale Wheeler, RDC Chairperson, Performing Arts. “As new as they are to the region, they continue to demonstrate their commitment to community. Their major donation to support our Music students will provide rewarding and deserved scholarships, encouraging our students to strive for the best and pursue their artistic dreams.”

Music students will start benefitting this year from the generosity of Harvard Broadcasting.
“We’re very excited about being able to provide on-going financial assistance to the Music students of RDC,” says Daryl Holien, General Manger and Program Director, 100.7FM The River. “We believe that this investment will be of great benefit to those students who chose to make music their future.”

This major donation highlights The River’s philanthropic giving style, and what timing! Canada is celebrating National Philanthropy Week November 14-18. Philanthropy Week “celebrates this (philanthropic) spirit and promotes the importance of involvement and giving at all levels by individuals, companies, and organizations,” as stated by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
