RDC Athletics Offers Basketball Development Program for Youth

Red Deer, October 3, 2011 – RDC Athletics and the Be Fit For Life Centre is launching HOOPS Basketball, an eight week introductory program designed as a developmental program for youth that hones individual skills and team play.  The program runs from October 22 to December 10, 2011 in the Kevin Sirois Gym at Red Deer College.

Junior Knights, Senior Knights and Warriors will play on shortened courts and lowered baskets. Team play involves 3-on-3 games and builds to 4-on-4. Queens and Kings use regulation sized courts and basket height, and their team play builds from 3-on-3 to 5-on-5.

The Saturday program is all about skill development and getting kids involved in game-play. Scores aren’t kept and the focus of the program is for kids to be active and to have fun!

RDC Kings Basketball Assistant Coach Ken Smith, BEd, MEd, will be instructing HOOPS this year. His main goals are to emphasize a fun basketball program where the kids learn skill development and sportsmanship. The program will be tailored to the skill level of participants.

Smith will also be accompanied by practicum students from the Kinesiology Department of RDC. To add to the positive HOOPS experience, RDC Kings basketball team members will assist with the programming. We believe having future stars learn alongside the RDC Kings will instill great memories and a very positive learning opportunity.

All HOOPS participants will receive a RDC Athletics Future Stars Pass, which will grant them access to all RDC Athletics home games for the regular season. This pass will also allow each participant and guardian admittance to the Fall Basketball Classic Tournament.
