RDC Motion Picture Arts Program wins Best Student Production

Red Deer, June 6, 2011 – Another RDC Motion Picture Arts student has tasted success as his recent short film “Break Up, Breakdown” was awarded Best Student Production at the recent 37th Annual Alberta Film & Television Awards.

Break Up, Breakdown was produced by 2010 Motion Picture Arts graduate, Kyle Mosonyi, who now lives in Ontario. The film is the story of a young man who, over the course of a snowy Christmas Eve day, comes to terms with the ending of a recent two year relationship. The film was written by Kyle over a three week period in November, 2008. In addition to writing and producing, Kyle also directed and edited the short film.

After it received the green light by RDC Motion Picture Arts instructors for production, Break Up, Breakdown was filmed over a two week period in February, 2009.  A thirty minute version was completed by April, 2009. Kyle continually worked on the film for the next year and a half making significant cuts, switching the bulk of the scenes to black and white, and replacing all the music. The version that exists now (a leaner eight minute version) was completed in January, 2011.

"I am extremely honoured to have represented Red Deer College in the 'Best Student Production' category at this year's Alberta Film & Television Awards. When I was informed of the news back in my home town of Windsor, Ontario, I was floored! This is an incredibly exciting moment in my young filmmaking career. Being associated among Alberta's elite film and television productions gives me the motivational drive to succeed in this highly competitive industry. Thank you to the Alberta Media Production Industries Association for sparking my dream career track!" says Kyle Mosonyi.

The Alberta Film & Television Awards, celebrating excellence and outstanding achievement in Albertan film, television and new media, were handed out at an Edmonton gala on Saturday, May 28.

The Awards are handed out by the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA), a non-profit professional association representing everyone from students in film, television and digital media programs, to actors, editors, producers, broadcasters & others. Award recipients, including Kyle, receive a statuette, known as the ‘Rosie’. Awards were handed out at the recent celebration in more than 50 categories representing various aspects of the film and television industry in Alberta.
