RDC Music Program Presents the Symphonic Winds

Red Deer, October 25, 2011 – The RDC Music Program will celebrate some of the best performances for band music from the past 25 years through a concert on November 3.

The Symphonic Winds will perform Africa: Ceremony Song and Ritual by Robert W. Smith, based on the primitive folk music of Western Africa. Inspired by the recordings and research of Stephen Jay, the work features traditional ceremonial music with dynamic percussive invocations.

To commemorate Remembrance Day, The Winds will also perform Victory at Sea by Richard Rogers. This “symphonic scenario” presents an integrated pictorial and musical history of the events pertaining to the life and death of those engaged in the naval action of World War II. The music captures the panoramic war at sea, expressing the rolling of the boundless waters and the profound thanksgiving of sailors returning home.

The Symphonic Winds, which is composed of RDC students, faculty, staff and community instrumentalists, will be joined in concert by members of local high school bands.

Under the direction of Greg Wheeler, Hunting Hills High School Sr. Symphonic School
Will perform works based on Roman and Celtic influences.  Hadrian’s Wall by Robert W. Smith pays tribute to the great 73 mile long stone wall that the Romans built across northern England in 122 AD, portions of which still remain today.

Chris Bushell will direct the Innisfail Jr. and Sr. High School Senior Band in performances of
King Across the Water by Bruce Fraser, Fireflies, arranged by John Wasson and Jungle Dance by Brian Balmages.  The Notre Dame High School Band, under the direction of Doug Ward, will perform Trio No. 1 by James Hook, Kingsfold March by Victor Flowers and Russian Folk Dance by Dan Rager.

The grand finale features all bands performing together on A Hymnsong of Philip Bliss by David R. Holsinger and Bandology by Eric Osterling.
