RDC Music program presents first concerts of the New Year

Red Deer, January 6, 2012 – The RDC Music program is kicking off the New Year with two great events on the Mainstage that feature the talents of students and faculty alike.

Music Scholarship Competition
Thursday, January 12  
1:00 p.m. | Arts Centre Mainstage  

Up to $4000 in prize money is on the line in the first student concert of the New Year. Finalists for the competition were selected from the RDC Music Diploma program in December after the students submitted recorded work. Those students that advanced to the final round of judging will compete for a $750 first prize and $250 second prize in the following categories: Voice, Piano, Guitar and Instrumental.

The prize money is granted from monies raised through our annual fundraiser, Affairs of the Arts, which enables RDC to enhance learning experiences and provide scholarships and awards to deserving students.

The final round of the competition is a live performance on Thursday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m. on the Arts Centre Mainstage.  The event, which is open to the public, will be judged by guest adjudicators Charles Austin, Bobby Cairns, Allan Gilliland and Jolaine Kerley.  Results of the competition will be announced that afternoon.  Admission is $2.00 at the door.

Faculty Jazz Cabaret
Saturday, January 14
7:30 p.m. | Arts Centre Mainstage

Join the Music Faculty for an evening of jazz, cabaret style. The evening features the silky voice of Danica Hoffart, the soloist in a Gershwin jazz set.  Sharon Braun will solo in an exotic set while Steve Sherman on trumpet, Doug Ward on saxophone, Jeremy Doody on jazz guitar, Curtis Phagoo on bass and Malcolm Bell on drums will perform soulful, rhythmic jazz, including faculty favourites.
