The town that go away with murder
“Fuente Ovejuna!” (translation: “Sheep Well!”) is the rallying cry from the village of the same name. A fiery play about injustice and the will of the people to overcome a brutal régime, this play of the Spanish Golden age of the 17th century crackles with passion and love. When the wedding between local young lovers is broken up by an oppressive Commander, things begin to rapidly escalate. The excesses of manipulation, undue imprisonment, needless torture and abuse of authority are rank, and the people know that something has to be done. The town plots the overthrow of their overlord, and to accept the consequences. When later confronted with a deadly choice between freedom and assigning responsibility for their deeds, the villagers choose to respond “Fuente Ovejuna did it!” The results are surprising.
Based upon historical fact, the play carries a message from the past about social justice in the face of tyranny; a message which echoes throughout Northern Africa and the world today.

“Give me a gown and a crown and a king you will have”
An overly pampered king, bored with life, devises a game to amuse himself. Mischievously he selects a commoner and makes him king for a day. Enter Abu al-Husan who is brought to the palace in a drunken stupor and is put on the throne. The King’s plan immediately goes awry when Abu assumes the role with ease and no one notices that a switch has been made – not even the queen!
This playful fable A Thousand and One Nights draws conclusions about the nature and abuse of authority.
