Red Deer College recognizes Peter Weddell as Distinguished Alumnus
Red Deer, June 3, 2011 – Peter Weddell is being honoured today as Red Deer College’s 2011 Distinguished Alumnus. Mr. Weddell will receive this award at the College’s 47th Convocation Ceremony at the Capri Centre on Friday, June 3.
Peter is a lifelong advocate for a cleaner, safer, and friendlier community. He is a model citizen and a leader who continually tries to make our world a better place in all he does. Peter enjoyed a lifelong career in Parks & Recreation. In 1986, he was appointed to be the Information Officer for the Waskasoo Park System in the City of Red Deer. He is a gentle but determined activist in park preservation. Peter concluded his career as a ByLaw Officer for the City of Red Deer.
At first one might think that Peter’s greatest contribution to our city has been carrying the torch for the environment, but one would be remiss if they did not recognize a much larger contribution than that: his greatest contribution is setting an example of what good citizenship is. He takes active interest in the Kerrywood Nature Centre, Re-Think Red Deer, issues relating to water and air quality, civic affairs, and community development.
First presented in 1997, the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award was created to honour living Red Deer College alum who have distinguished themselves in one or more of the following areas:
• Professional achievement – exemplary leadership and accomplishment in their chosen profession
• Academic achievement – through lifelong learning and/or outstanding contributions toward enhancing their profession
• Public service achievement – exemplary community and public service endeavours which bring credit to the community, Red Deer College and their profession
