Industry
Working with Industry?
Alberta Colleges are known for their extensive connections to their Communities, this includes industry partners. Successful projects often require an industry partner who can relate to the intellectual property being developed or solutions being proposed and then invest in the project. However, prior to this occurring there are a number of factors that must be considered.
First, who pays and how much? This negotiation is usually centered around getting the industry partner to invest cash or in-kind along with RDC's investment and then leveraging those investments with a funding agency or perhaps other partners.
Second, who owns the intellectual property that might be developed? This negotiation can become very time consuming. However in the Office of Applied Research and Innovation we want to protect our Faculty interest in new intellectual property, while preserving industry’s ownership in existing intellectual property that they might bring into a project. The Office has many years of experience negotiating flexible and compatible agreements to satisfy the needs of both parties all the while trying to maximize the economic impact of the relationship.
