Life at RDC

Communications Studies

Communication affects everyone’s life at virtually every second of the day. We are constantly sending messages to each other, whether through our words, body language, or media. Communications studies may include a variety of topics:

  • Media studies (film, television, radio, newspapers, advertising)
  • New media technologies (the internet, MP3 players, videogames, DVDs)
  • Interpersonal communications (effective speaking and presentation skills)
  • Written communications (corporate newsletters, magazine or newspaper articles, blogs)

Studying communication enhances your own potential to communicate with yourself, friends, family, co-workers and customers. You will become more media savvy; you will learn to interpret movies, TV shows, music, games, and advertisements in new and unexpected ways. You will also develop the ability to understand and speak the language of the business world, as communications studies can give you strong reading, writing, and listening skills.

Communications experts are in demand!

Good communication skills can help you find a job in virtually any field. Some careers relating more specifically to communication include jobs in journalism, human resources, public relations, marketing, and management. Other career options might include motivational speaker, dispute negotiator, telecommunications specialist, or editor.

Communications major and minor

Students majoring in communications studies will transfer to the university of their choice after two years at RDC. Work with an advisor to make sure you know the program and admission requirements of that university. Many of our communications majors transfer to the University of Calgary.

Additionally, students who major in English, sociology, or psychology in the RDC/U of C transfer program may choose to minor in communications. Again, please contact an advisor to make sure you meet all program requirements.
