History
History is the study and analysis of the past. It addresses the various interactions among people, as impacted by religious, intellectual, political, economic, class, gender and social forces, among others. Historians examine these interactions in terms of cultures, nations, and defined periods of time, to create an accessible narrative and critical analysis.
History seeks its answers to questions concerning the past through the focused study of written documents and artefacts. The general skills developed through the study of history are those necessary in the workplace today: the ability to think critically, to find relevant information and analyse it, and to communicate effectively using a variety of media. Specifically, the study of history is required for work in museums, galleries, archives, as well as for research projects. A history degree is also an excellent foundation for programs in law, education, politics, and journalism. The opportunities for work using the abilities developed in history are limited only by the imagination.
The history major at Red Deer College provides a strong foundation for two-year university transfer to a degree program at any major university. In addition, students enrolled in the University of Calgary/RDC collaborative degree program may also choose to complete a history minor.
