Sociology is concerned with the process and organization of society and with how individuals make sense out of their lives and experiences.
Sociology prepares students to be knowledgeable, effective and productive citizens in the very complex modern world. Sociology is a dynamic and powerful tool to understand why and how people organize themselves and behave as they do, at work and at play, in families, groups, communities, organizations and societies.
Sociology students acquire the ability to think critically, to understand, analyze and synthesize information, to distinguish the reality behind the rhetoric of social life, and to write and argue convincingly. The sociological perspective, its concepts, knowledge and theories, and its array of research methods and techniques for gathering and analyzing data help students to understand such diverse problems as crime, poverty, discrimination, inequality, ignorance and social injustice, and contribute to their solutions.
Sociology is a popular major for students planning careers in such professions as law, business, journalism, criminal justice, politics, health care, public administration or social services. The B.A. program at RDC is also excellent preparation for graduate work and for careers in sociology such as social researcher, professor, criminologist, human services administrator, program planner, or policy analyst.
The sociology major at RDC provides a strong foundation for transfer to a degree program at any major university. As well, you may complete your B.A. in sociology through the UofC/RDC collaborative degree program, taking all your courses on the RDC campus.
