Learning Activities
Study Smart.
Rather than sitting in class listening to someone lecture about programming concepts, you will come to class with your laptop and learn by doing. You will be asked to write software and find solutions starting on day one. As a graduate of the Computer Information Systems Program you will be well prepared to solve real world problems.
As a student, you will be scheduled approximately 30 hours per week. Half of these hours will be spent in lectures of about 40 students where instructors with extensive industry experience will explain concepts and best-practices. We make use of blended learning to give you a choice of learning styles. The other half of your time will be spent in hands-on lab activities with 20 other students. Labs will reinforce concepts and give you practice through practical problems. We encourage cohort-supported learning, where you work co-operatively with your classmates to succeed.
At RDC, small class size allows you to form strong working relationships, support structures, and friendships. The relationships and friendships you develop while in the Computer Information Systems Technology Program last long after your education is complete. Your classmates will ultimately form a widespread and invaluable network of industry contacts as you shift into the workplace.
In the CIS program you will have a project course in each year to allow you to practice and develop project managment and group skills. You will also be able to pursue IT topics that are of interest to you.
To prepare you for the workplace, you have the choice of taking a 6 week practicum or a paid 16 week work experience. This will give you the required experience to transition smoothly from college to the IT industry.
