Careers in the Arts

Arts & Culture is a growth industry in North America, with many theatre artists creating their own material for festivals, solo companies, industry productions and multi-disciplinary collaborations.  Film, television, circus entertainment and new media are also careers in which graduates of our program have found success.

Your specialized training and transferable skills will include heightened critical and analytical thinking, effective communication, creative problem solving and teamwork skills.  All of these make you a prime candidate for potential career opportunities in many cultural an other knowledge-based industries.

Unique to RDC - we offer a series of courses that examines the business of theatre.  Developing an artist portfolio, exploring training options and goal setting, your enhanced business skills will focus on self-marketing and promotion, legal and financial planning, community volunteerism, cultural industry research, effective time management and grantsmanship for the self-employed artist in Canada.  Research will include networking with local, national and world theatres and festivals and establishing professional connections and mentorship possibilties.

And the good news is you don't have to leave! Theatre Performance & Creation graduates are able to block transfer accumulated credits towards Year 3 of the Motion Picture Arts program in Acting or Production.  Unique to Red Deer College, the Applied Degree in Motion Picture Arts offers intensive post-diploma training in Acting or Production.

If you're thinking you might like to transfer to university liberal arts study or other theatre training schools in North America, we've got your covered!  RDC grads have applied their training to further excel at the National Theatre School in Montreal, Studio 58 in Vancouver and Sheridan College in Toronto.  Some have continued their study to receive a BA, BFA, BEd or MFA degree at the University of Alberta, York University, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge.
