New!  Red Deer College is proud to announce the Theatre & Entertainment Production  program - an innovative hands-on program designed to provide comprehensive behind-the-scenes training for the entertainment industry.  This program is unique, not so much in what we teach - it is how we teach it. 

Our two-year diploma program involves a working equilibrium between modules of focused classroom instruction and the equally demanding practical training during production periods. This distinctive approach allows more personalized and focused learning through one-to-one mentoring with experts in the field – all of which helps you to add some life balance and catch some down time.  In other words, you won’t be expected to turn in a paper the morning after a late-night production. After all, there is more to life than just books.

Performing Arts at Red Deer College embraces both traditional and innovative hands-on instruction by faculty and staff who are energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated to the highest standards of excellence. Through multidisciplinary experiences both in and out of the classroom you are encouraged to seek a broader understanding of the world around you that reflects the true nature of arts and culture. Going to a jazz concert, running an afternoon dance show, watching the latest screening of new film shorts, going to gallery exhibitions; these are all part of the daily life of a performing arts student.

The Production program is an integral part of the Performing Arts at RDC, collaborating with directors and designers, and sharing access to costumes, props, weaponry, special effects & lighting and sound equipment.  Our tremendous resources provide you with intense, real world experience combined with the small class sizes and personal attention that make RDC a great place.  We know when you get here . . . you’ll be glad you did.

Put that Passion to Work

All of our Production students are active members of our resident production company Theatre at Red Deer College; they work side by side with faculty and guest artists to mount our busy show schedule.  We strive to produce a season of innovative and challenging plays from a variety of styles, historical periods, new Canadian works and world premiers to provide valuable real-world experience.  Production students might build a box set, fly in a huge painted drop (or paint the drop), make fake food, or program moving lights.  Our varied types of productions give you the opportunity to learn the multitude of skills needed to work in the never-boring entertainment industry.
