Red Deer College Kings Basketball fans should be excited to watch a high-tempo, athletic style of basketball this season. The Kings will be looking to put pressure on opposing teams all year long with their physical style, and pressure type game. The squad is very young with 9 first year players so it will take some time to come together collectively as a group. The few veterans on the team will be looked upon as early leaders and to help the newcomer’s instil the defensive and offensive team concepts.
The Kings will feature a backcourt comprised of skilled athletes and promising new players. Guard Graeme McCallum will provide leadership and will be needed to help run the team's offense/defence alongside his Vancouver running mate Chris Porteous. Third year guard Andrew Cassidy will be relied onto serve as the defensive leader and shooter of the Kings. Lloyd Strickland (PG from the defending 4A Raymond champs), two gifted Toronto Guards Jason David & Sean Giscombe, alongside Team Alberta provincial teamer Eric Bakker, and returning PG Ryan Wachter will all be relied onto help the Kings run their up-tempo style of play from the backcourt.
A key to RDC’s season will be the play of forwards Chris Porteous (Vancouver) and Terrell Campbell (Toronto). Both have tremendous abilities and athleticism and have looked good early on in camp. Chris will be required to provide consistent scoring from both the guard and forward positions. First year forward Eduardo Sanchez-Caba will be looking to battle it out for playing time as well at the forward position. Second year center Adam Weir (Calgary) will be rounding out the post position and should bring both a physical/finesse presence to the Kings frontcourt. Kings will require both their size and toughness to rebound and finish around the basket throughout a loaded a very difficult ACAC south division.
Last season, the Kings won 15 games, finished alone in 2nd place in the ACAC South Division and advanced to the Conference semi finals, only to lose a tough 1 point game. Although the Kings will feature a team stacked with new faces and young guns this season, RDC and the community’s fans are excited about the future and the 2009-2010 season. If Coach Craig Behan’s belief that the team has the chance to be better in almost all areas of the game in 2009-10 comes to fruition, it will be an exciting season at Red Deer College.
