Life at RDC

Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing

For companies to grow, they need to develop new ways of manufacturing and new ways of doing business. This requires people who are not only technicians but innovators. The new Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing will train technical specialists in the design and development of prototypes and products. This unique facility will create an environment that allows learners to mentor and inspire eachother!

Central Alberta's vibrant and growing manufacturing sector needs highly-skilled employees who are also versed in the advanced technology and the business elements of manufacturing.

Real-life solutions
Courses and learning activities will present real-life manufacturing and business problems. The new space will include labs for Prototyping, Instrumentation, and CNC Machining (Computer Numerical Control, a computer controller that reads instructions and drives the tool - photo above) and will partner closely with Trades' classrooms and facilities. The Centre will also have technology transfer services, provided by the Office of Applied Research and Innovation.

BCTL plans to develop the skills of innovation and creativity in our students, whether they train as technicians, trades people or business graduates. Expansion will provide the space to carry out more research and technology.

The need to educate and train students and industry personnel in new techniques, new technology and new business is a pressing one. RDC is meeting that need head on.  Plans are underway to begin much of the innovative work in Fall 2009.
