A Needed Boost Offers Real Value to Students

Cenovus and Encana Donations Add $1 Million to RDC Campaign

Two donations, two objectives. Thanks to the outstanding financial support of two major Alberta oil and gas companies, the doors to enhanced learning for Red Deer College (RDC) students have opened even wider.

The Building Communities Through Learning (BCTL) Campaign has received donations from Cenovus Energy Inc. and Encana Corporation totaling $1 million.

“The generous contributions from Cenovus and Encana support RDC’s initiative to provide learning programs and spaces that allow central Albertans to learn in an innovative environment, both here at the College and in the communities of central Alberta,” says Joel Ward, RDC President. “This type of leadership from two of Canada’s leading corporations provides a needed boost to our Campaign at a crucial time as our plans move forward. We are grateful for their support.”

The $1 million total donation is directed towards two major objectives: RDC’s Flexible Learning Commons and the Innovative Delivery/Flexible Learning Initiative

Meeting needs. Learning commons at RDC meet the needs of changing demands in education. How? Within hours, the space can transition from nursing classrooms to visual art program space, for one example. Learning commons also provide an open space where students can study and learn.

“We are fortunate to be able to contribute to the building of an interactive and collaborative learning environment that will provide tangible and ongoing value for students for many years to come,” says Cenovus Energy’s Sheila McIntosh, Executive Vice-President, Communications & Stakeholder Relations. “We look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of these initiatives and the benefits they will provide to the community.”

Delivery to your door. The Innovative Delivery/Flexible Learning Initiative will enable RDC to support Red Deer and central Alberta communities by bringing the learning to them. If the demand is there, RDC will help deliver services directly to the area – whether training nurses in a rural setting, offering trades training and skills upgrading or providing rural learning support systems.

“Encana is pleased that our donation to the BCTL Campaign will be used to help launch their Flexible Learning Strategy, giving communities in central Alberta access to local, quality post-secondary education,” says Pat MacDonald, Vice-President, Human Resources & Communications, Encana.

At home or throughout the region, donations are changing lives and improving communities for today and tomorrow.
