U of A Occupational Health & Safety Certificate

For students enrolling after Sept 1, 2005 who want to receive their U of A Occupational Health & Safety Certificate, they must now complete 6 compulsory core courses, any 2 of a possible 8 elective core courses, and 35 hours in elective enrichment courses (minimum 320 hours total) . Courses/seminars may not be offered every semester. Intended for part-time students working in the field, the program will take approximately two to three years to complete.

Compulsory Core Courses (all 6 courses)

  • Fundamentals of Occupational Hygiene (formerly Occupational Hygiene I)
  • Applied Occupational Hygiene (formerly Occupational Hygiene II)
  • Health & Safety Legislation & Policy 
  • Introduction to Health and Safety Systems (formerly Accident Control I)
  • Management of Health and Safety Systems (formerly Accident Control II)
  • Organizational Behaviour (Bus 303)
    The theory and practice of the viable organization will be examined in three major parts: the organizational environment, the organizational structure, and the behaviour of groups and individuals within the organization. The course objective is to provide practitioners with a better understanding of the organizational-human interface, to enable them to develop a more effective management style.   • Fundamentals of Auditing

  • Safety Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control
  • Managing Performance Through Training and Development
  • Any two 21 hr elective courses from the U of A Environmental Resource Management (will qualify as one course only)

Elective enrichment courses are offered on a rotating basis. Not all courses are offered every year.

1 day = 7 credit hrs
2 day = 14 credit hrs
3 day = 21 credit hrs
