ASCHA Activity Coordinator

Who should take this program?

Responding to the demand of the senior housing sector, the Alberta Senior Citizens Housing Association has worked with RDC since 1996 to develop and deliver a specialized certificate program for Activity Coordinators.

Designed for individuals with an interest in gaining knowledge and understanding of this unique industry and wanting to work in recreation and activities in seniors' housing, this program is excellent in orientating individuals to the field of leadership, effectively handling communication and conflict whilst maintaining client satisfaction within the parameters of aging processes. Our program has an in-class component to assist you to develop your skills in personal and professional development, understanding the principles of recreation and leisure, program development and older adult certification.

Graduates will gain the knowledge to apply their skills in recreation and leisure activities within the industry and open up opportunities in positions such as Activity Coordinator. Graduates will improve their skills in understanding and being a positive influence on the physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being of seniors.

This program has an online and in-class component and requires the completion of 7 core courses:

Online courses include:

  • Communications & Conflict Management
  • Leadership Skills
  • Aging Processes

Classroom instructional courses include:

  • Program Development
  • Principles of Recreation and Leisure
  • Personal and Professional Development

Please note: For the 3 core online delivery courses (see common courses below), you will need to be an independent learner with mature time management skills to successfully complete this portion of the program. The remaining 4 core courses will be in-class. (We will endeavor to convert these courses to online delivery in the future.)
