Behavioral Standards In Residence
Residence is a community of just under 600 students. Behavioral standards have been established in order to create a safe, comfortable and effective living and studying environment which ensures the physical and emotional well being of all residents, as well as the protection of personal and College property.
Any Behavior that adversely affects a person's rights (student or staff), or is damaging to personal or College property, is subject to disciplinary action against the person(s) involved. Disciplinary action may include a verbal or written warning, a monetary fine, Residence probation and/or eviction from Residence. For an exhaustive list of behavioral standards, please refer to the Residence Handbook.
Resident Assistants (R.A.'s)
Each area in Residence has a Resident Assistant. There are three R.A.'s on duty in the evenings and on the weekend when the Residence Office is closed. The On-Duty R.A.'s carry cell phones and are responsible for the supervision of the Residences during these times.
The R.A.'s are trained in many areas including First Aid, Suicide Prevention, Alcohol Awareness, Communication Skills and Conflict Mediation, just to name a few. Your R.A. will be planning and running a variety of programs and activities throughout the year such as tobogganing, ski trips, movie nights, workshops, and other such programs that enable them to help residents adapt to Residence life and build community in Residence.

Roommates
The majority of the units in Residence have 4 bedrooms. Even though your bedroom is separate, you share with your roommates the living room, kitchen, storage areas, and washrooms. It is important that all of the roommates get together within the first few weeks to discuss and agree upon general rules of the house. Topics that should be discussed include: who and when certain chores get taken care, appropriate noise levels at certain times, and agreed upon guests and gatherings.
Room assignments are done based on the information you submit on your Residence Application form. These assignments are not necessarily permanent and may be changed upon your request only if and when a different unit is available. If you would like a room change, please contact the Residence Office. Not all requests can be accommodated but your request will be kept on file
Understandably not all roommates are going to get along. Before filing a room change request, we strongly recommend that you discuss the issue with your roommate(s) to see if anything can be done to alleviate the problem. If that isn't possible, we can arrange to have a Resident Assistant sit in and mediate a meeting between the parties involved.
Living with other people is a great learning experience, as well as opens you up to new and exciting social ventures. Having roommates usually also means that you broaden your circle of friends, as you get to know your roommates friends as well.
What to Bring / What Not to Bring
When preparing to live in Residence, there are a few things that you should keep in mind.
What to Bring:
- Even though the units are fully furnished, you still need to bring any personal items that you want or need.
- You will need to bring: towels, linens and bedding. The mattresses are single (39"x75" or 39"x80").
- You will also need to supply your own dishes, cookware, microwaves and other small kitchen appliances.
- Other than a vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies are not provided. You will need a mop, bucket, garbage bags and any other cleaning supplies. Garbage cans are provided.
- Cable is included in your rent and is available in the living room, but you will need to supply your own television. Stereos, V.C.R's and D.V.D players are also not provided.
- Some handy things to remember are: hangars, extension cords, power bars, a phone, desk lamp and washroom supplies.
- Bring entertainment for yourself and your roommates (i.e. movies, music, etc.)
What Not to Bring:
- Dangerous and hazardous items may not be brought onto campus. Anyone found to be in possession of such items will be evicted from Residence. Weapons of any kind are not allowed in Residence, including but not limited to, paint ball guns, air/pellet guns, knives and swords. In addition, motor bikes, propane tanks and accelerants cannot be kept inside the unit.
- For health reasons, pets are not permitted in Residence. Anyone found to be in possession of an animal in Residence will be asked to remove the animal and will face disciplinary action. Fish in tanks of 10 litres or less ARE allowed.
- Only tacks and pins may be used for hanging posters and pictures. Please do not use nails or screws to hang pictures or other items on the unit walls. Also, do not use any type of adhesive material to hang things on the walls.
- Non-prescription drugs classified as illegal under the criminal code of Canada are not permitted in Residence or on campus grounds. Anyone found to be in possession of, distributing, selling or using such substances will be subject to legal action and immediate eviction from Residence. We reserve the right to confiscate any illegal substances.
House Checks / Cleanliness
The housekeeping staff for Residence cleans, Mon-Fri, the common areas within Residence. This includes laundry areas, meeting spaces, hallways, and common garbages. The housekeeping staff DOES NOT clean Residence units or bedrooms.
Units found to be consistently dirty and/or containing excessive damages, may be subject to unannounced checks by the Assistant Residence Manager, and the possibility of bringing in the Residence Cleaner.
House checks are done in October, November, February, and March. House checks always take place between noon and nine p.m. If your suite is found to be in an unsatisfactory condition, the Residence Cleaner will be sent in at a cost of $20/hr, minimum of 1 hour.
In addition to having house checks, it is important to keep your unit clean on a regular basis. Remember that you are most likely not the only one living in that unit, and keeping your dishes clean, keeping the kitchen area sanitary, and the living room suitable to entertain guests just makes living together easier and more comfortable. Also, please haul your garbage to the nearest dumpster on a regular basis. DO NOT leave your garbage bags outside your front door for any period of time, as bugs and mice tend to make a mess out of it.

Maintenance
RDC Residence currently employs one maintenance professional. He is on campus Mon-Fri from 7am to 3pm. If you have a maintenance concern, please contact the Residence Office during those times, or, if you have a problem in the evenings or during weekends, please contact your R.A..

Residence Keys
Replacement of lost keys, including a lock change, is $50. If you lose your keys, contact the Residence Office immediately so that we can issue a spare set of keys and arrange for a lock change.
If you lock yourself out after the Residence Office has closed, contact the on-duty Resident Assistant. After 11:00pm, contact the Residence Security. During Residence Office hours, come to the office for a set of travelers keys. Locking yourself out more than twice, after office hours, will result in a violation ticket. Failure to return the travelers keys on a set date will result in a lock change and a $50 charge assessed to you.
We would STRONGLY recommend that unit and bedroom doors be kept locked, particularly when the unit is empty. RDC is not responsible for lost or stolen property.
PLEASE HOLD ON TO YOUR KEYS!!
Residence Mail
Your mailbox number is the same as your bedroom door number. All correspondence from the Residence Office will be delivered to your Residence mailbox.
Mail is sorted at the Residence Administration Building and is in the boxes by NOON on working days.
If you receive a parcel, a notice card will be placed in your mailbox. All parcels can be picked up at the Residence Administration Building during regular office hours.
The Residence Office will also mail letters from students, as long as their correspondence has sufficient postage attached to it. Stamps may be purchased at the college bookstore.
Parking in Residence
There are parking stalls within Residence specifically for students living on campus. Most of these stalls are directly in front of your unit, or within a 2 minute walk to your unit.
When you are accepted into Residence, it is in your best interest (if you plan on bringing a vehicle) to apply for parking at the same time. The sooner you apply for parking, the better chance you have of receiving a stall closer to your unit.

Residence Security
RDC employs Security staff that are on-duty on campus 24hrs a day, everyday. College Security patrol the campus, and are at the information desk ready to answer questions or respond to concerns on campus. RDC Residence also employs Security staff who focus their energy towards Residence concerns and enforcements. The Security staff are fully trained in first-aid, conflict management, as well as many other security measures.
We strongly urge you to keep your room and unit door locked at all times. If you have a security concern, please see your R.A., a Residence or College Security staff member, the Residence Life Coordinator or the Residence Manager.
