Working in Canada
Working in Canada while you’re attending RDC can be a great way to practice your English, get some Canadian work experience, meet some new friends ... and earn a bit of extra money to help pay for school! In addition, Citizenship and Immigration Canada have made some recent changes that have expanded opportunities for international students to work in Canada.
On-and-Off Campus Work
While studying at RDC, international students with a valid Study Permit are eligible to work on-campus full-time. On-campus employment opportunities include jobs such as an assistant in academic faculties, library assistant, food services and bookstore assistants. Off-campus work is available to students in academic programs and can be in a variety of areas, including tourism, retail and service sectors. This program is available to qualified academic students to work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during vacation breaks.
International students may now work off-campus under the following conditions:
- They have completed six months of full-time study in their program.
- They are in good academic standing at the college.
- The off-campus employment is not more than 20 hours per week.
For off-campus work, students must obtain a special Work Permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. For details and application forms please review, www.cic.gc.ca.
Field Work
Many programs at RDC include a Field Work component. Field Work combines classroom study with supervised, professional, paid, off-campus work experience in Canada.
Student Volunteers
Get involved! We have a large team of international student volunteers who help with activities on-campus and in Red Deer. Volunteers assist with Orientation, tours of the campus, and preparing students for studies at RDC. If you would like to volunteer please contact international@rdc.ab.ca.
Work After Graduation
After graduation from an academic program of 8 months or longer, international students are now eligible to work for up to 3 years after graduation in Canada. For details about the Post-Graduation Work Permit program visit, www.cic.gc.ca.
