Winter Term – January 11, 2011
Spring Term – May 2, 2011
PAYMENT OPTIONS
Tuition Payment from your Student Loan
Tuition for Winter term is due January 9, 2010.
Tuition payment from your government student loan (we call this “tuition remittance”) occurs during the student loan signing process. The process for having your loan signed varies according to the province or territory that you applied for funding through.
Alberta Residents
There are two ways your loan can be signed and used to pay your tuition:
- Electronic Processing
- In-Person Loan Signing
Because our NEW electronic process happens behind the scenes and it takes a little while for you to receive your documentation in the mail, your tuition might be paid and you don’t even know it!
Follow these steps to determine if your tuition has been paid through our new electronic loan signing process.
- Check your RDC Student Account. If your loan was electronically confirmed a loan payment may have already been made to your account.
- If your RDC Student Account shows a loan payment pending for the full amount of your tuition, then you're all set.
If you are receiving a Canada Student Loan, your loan papers will arrive in the mail. Follow the instructions to get your money and ensure that the funds are sent to RDC.
If you are receiving an Alberta Student Loan for the first time, your loan papers will arrive in the mail. Follow the instructions to get your money and ensure that the funds are sent to RDC.
If you are receiving an Alberta Student Loan and have received one in the past, your loan will be processed electronically and either direct deposited into your account or a cheque will be mailed to you.
Remember: If your loan wasn’t enough to pay for all of your tuition you’ll need to pay the balance or arrange for an extension before the tuition deadline (see Tuition Deferral).
If your RDC Student Account shows that your tuition has not been paid choose from the following options:
- Pay your tuition from your own resources (i.e. credit card)
- Request an extension of your tuition deadine
Tips for Students with Student Loans
Don't get caught with an empty bank account! Get to know your funding to avoid an unpleasant surprise in the Winter Term!
- Check your Notice of Assessment Letter carefully
- Each student's loan is unique. Don't assume that you will receive your funding in the same way as your friends or classmates
- Add up how much money you will receive each semester. You'll probably notice that you receive significantly more money in the fall term. You'll need to plan carefully so that some of this money is left over at the end of the fall term or else it will be hard to make ends meet in the winter term
- If you are in a program that is longer than 8 months, check your Notice of Assessment carefully
Tuition for winter term is due in January. You probably won't get your second loan until after February or even March.
To help you manage your money and meet your tuition deadlines we encourage you to pay all or a portion of your winter tuition from the money you receive in the Fall term. We can review your Notice of Assessment and help you decide how much money to pay now.
Out of Province Students except NWT
To use your loan to pay for your tuition, bring your certificates to RDC prior to the tuition deadline (January 9) to be signed. Your tuition will be considered paid as of the date your loan is signed. For complete details visit our loan signing section.
If you haven't received your loan papers by January 9, don't worry! Simply contact our office and let us know you need to extend your tuition deadline.
NWT
Funding from NWT Student Financial Assistance is provided directly to the student and not until after the first day of classes.
You must submit your Form D to the Student Funding & Awards Office. We will complete your form and fax it to NWT on your behalf.
- Form D can be printed from the NWT SFA website
- Drop off your Form D to our office, Room 1101 RDC, or fax it to us at 403.342.3262
Remember: It is your responsibility to submit your Form D AND pay your tuition by the tuition deadline (January 9). Failure to do so will result in being dropped from your classes for non-payment. You may also be penalized with a $25.00 late fee. As well, you are not guaranteed re-registration in any of your classes, as some classes fill quickly.
Extending your Tuition Deadline (Tuition Deferral)
Remember! If your loan has been approved you can use your loan to pay for your tuition even if you haven't received your funds yet. You just need to let us know that you’ve got funding on the way and we’ll extend your tuition deadline.

Failure to pay your tuition by the tuition deadline or arrange a tuition deferral will result in being dropped from your classes for non-payment. You may also be penalized with a $25.00 late fee. As well, you are not guaranteed re-registration in any of your classes, as some classes fill quickly.
Paying your tuition with your own resources
If you want to pay your tuition from a source other than your student loan, there are various options available to you through our Cashier's Office. Click here for details.
Students who wish to pay for their tuition and any other fees using an alternate method (i.e. VISA, Mastercard, American Express, cash) MUST DO SO PRIOR TO PRESENTING THEIR CERTIFICATES TO THE STUDENT FUNDING & AWARDS OFFICE FOR SIGNING. Students presenting their certificates for signing will have tuition deducted.
Note: Alberta Residents wishing to pay tuition from their own resources and not their student loan should make payment in full one month prior to the start of classes as our electronic process will automatically take tuition from your loan if it has not been paid.
