Why Two Catalogues?

RDC Library offers you two ways to find the information you need. Find out more about our WorldCat Catalogue and our NEOS Library Catalogue.

1.      What is the WorldCat Catalogue?
2.      How can I search the WorldCat Catalogue?
3.      How are the WorldCat Catalogue and the NEOS Library Catalogue different?
4.      What is not included in the WorldCat Catalogue?
5.      Will I get the same information in the WorldCat Catalogue records and in NEOS Library Catalogue records?

1. What is the WorldCat Catalogue?

The WorldCat Catalogue is a unique version of WorldCat.org (a catalogue of items from libraries around the world) that displays items at RDC Library first in any search. When searching the WorldCat Catalogue, you are searching:

  • Resources owned by RDC Library, such as books, journals, DVDs, CDs, media, government publications and more.
  • Resources available from other academic libraries in the NEOS Library Consortium and other Canadian Libraries.
  • Resources in libraries around the world (a catalogue that includes over 1.5 billion items).
  • Article citations from a number of sources. "Find it @ RDC" links are provided to help locate the articles in full-text.
  • Some article databases to which RDC Library provides access.

2. How can I search the WorldCat Catalogue?

Use the WorldCat Catalogue search box, found on the RDC Library “Find> Books” page or on the “Find Books & DVDs” tab in any of the RDC subject guides.

You can choose to limit your search to RDC Library, NEOS Libraries, or Libraries Worldwide.
After performing a search, you can use the “Format” limit in the "Refine your search" column to limit your results. You can also limit your results to a specific author, publication year, language or topic.

3. How are the WorldCat Catalogue and the NEOS Library Catalogue different?

The WorldCat Catalogue:

  • Allows you to search for publications in libraries beyond the NEOS Consortium.
  • Provides more obvious identification of RDC Library items.
  • Allows you to see the various formats available for a specific title (i.e. - print, ebook, audio, large print).
  • Provides a more straightforward way to limit searches by format, year, language, author, etc.
  • Will retrieve journal articles from selected sources (you can find books, ebooks and articles all at the same time).
  • Citations are formatted in major reference styles (APA, MLA, or Chicago).
  • Allows you to set up a WorldCat account, which provides a way to create and share lists, tag records, and write reviews of items listed in the catalogue.
  • Links to Google Books so you can preview a book.

4. What is not included in the WorldCat Catalogue?

  • Your personal library account information (“NEOS My Account”).
  • RDC Library reserves.
  • Materials that are on order or in the process of being added to the collection.
  • Certain types of searches, such as a call number search.
  • Citations from every article database to which RDC Library provides access.

5. Will I get the same information in the WorldCat Catalogue records and in NEOS Library Catalogue records?

Bibliographic information (title, author, publisher, place & date of publication), location, call number and subject headings are the same in both the WorldCat Catalogue and the NEOS Library Catalogue.
the WorldCat Catalogue records do not include local notes and some other specific information.
