College Wireless Hotspots FAQ

Q. Where are the Wireless Internet Hot Spots on the College campus?
A. The Wireless Internet Hot Spots are well marked across campus.

  • 2600 hallway 
  • Library Information Common 
  • Hallway west of Bookstore (hallway to Cafeteria)
  • Forum seating area
  • Art Centre Link Lounge (2nd Floor, between the Arts Centre and College)
  • Seating area beside Far Side Lounge entrance

Q. Can I use my personal notebook computer?
A. Yes.

Q. What type of wireless network is in the Hotspots?
A. The Hotspots are able to connect with “WiFi” wireless network technology. Your computer should be compatible with WiFi 802.11B or 802.11G type technology.

Q. What version of web browser do I need?
A. Your computer should have MS Internet Explorer version 6 or newer.

Q.  Can I use other browsers?
A.  Yes, you can also use Firefox or Safari.

Q. Do I need a Red Deer College computer network account?
A. Yes. A RDC student network account or staff network account or faculty network account or a LIC Community Borrower network account is required.

Q. What setup changes do I need to make on my computer to access the Internet?
A. Before you attempt to connect to the Wireless Internet Hotspot network,

  • disable all Pop-Up Blockers,
  • disable all firewall software setup on your computer,
  • clear all the temporary internet files and cookies from your computer.
  • NOTE: Please remember to reactivate these settings when you log off of the Wireless Internet Hotspot network.

Q. How do I log on?
A. Open Internet Explorer

  • In the dialogue box which appears, type the domain your account is located in and your username and password in the spaces provided.
  • NOTE: Do not close this logon window while connected to the Hot Spot. 

When you are done using the hotspot click the disconnect button to end your session. The web page will then change and will say you are logged off.

NOTE: If this step is omitted it is possible for someone to hijack this session and make use of  your account.
