RDC offers mix of course delivery for Winter 2021 Term
Tuesday, October 20, 2020
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Red Deer College has decided to deliver its Winter Term programs and courses through a mixture of formats, including online, blended, and an increased number of in-person academic experiences.
“We have evaluated the College’s operations and course delivery options throughout Fall Term and made the decision to increase the capacity for in-person learning activities to about 40 per cent for Winter Term. This means that 2,000 to 3,000 students will be on-campus each day, along with faculty and staff,” says Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President. “Our remaining students will continue to learn in an online environment. We will use what we’ve learned during the past months to continue to ensure that all RDC students receive the quality education they’ve come to expect.”
After careful deliberation, several College programs will offer in-person instruction in January to support and enhance student learning success. These programs include:
• Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant
• Medical Lab Assistant
• Engineering Technology Programs
• Pharmacy Technician
• Early Learning and Child Care Certificate Program (also offered online)
• Transitional Vocational Program
Several programs will be offered through a blended-learning model, with either shops/labs or in-person lectures held on-campus. These include:
• Apprenticeship programs
• Legal Assistant
• Bachelor of Business Administration
• Kinesiology & Sport Studies - labs and/or special use space
• Practical Nurse - labs and/or special use space
• Bachelor of Science, Nursing - labs and/or special use space
• Science programs (Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering) – labs
• Health Care Aide – labs
• Visual Art and Bachelor of Fine Art – most studio classes
Select courses within the Schools of Arts and Sciences will also have a blended format of online and in-person learning, with one day in-person on-campus.
As the number of people increases on campus in January, the College will also expand its in-person services. More details about service delivery will be provided during the coming weeks.
Everyone who plans to visit Red Deer College will still be required to complete the mandatory online COVID-19 Training. In addition, all visitors must complete COVID-19 Contract Tracing and Alberta Health Daily Checklist every time they arrive on campus, using the SAFE RDC app. RDC protocols will remain for Winter Term, including the encouragement of frequent hand washing, physical distancing, mandatory face coverings, enhanced on-campus cleaning measures, and a reminder to those who are feeling ill to stay at home.
“The health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and guests remain paramount in our planning and decision making, and all on-campus visitors are expected to follow AHS and RDC COVID-19 guidelines,” says Nunoda. “We all have an important role to help keep ourselves and those around us safe, by being vigilant in our daily routines.”
RDC’s Academic Timetable for Winter 2021 Term will be finalized and shared with students in mid-November, providing more details about the delivery of specific courses.
