Your support for Student Emergency Funding

Thank you for your support for our students!

Over the month of April, you have contributed more than $4,000 to the Student Emergency Bursary and over $3,000 to the Students’ Association Student Food Bank! We received more than $2,000 from RDC staff and faculty, a $5,000 gift from the RDC Alumni Association, and gifts from community members for a total of $7,325 raisedThese gifts will go a long way to address the urgent needs of RDC students. Thank you for your generosity.

It’s been a tough month for our learners and their families. Like many of you, they have experienced decreases in household income or, in some cases, total lay-offs. The summer jobs that they rely on are, in many cases, no longer available. Other concerns, like child-care and transportation, are limiting the kinds of jobs they can take.

Times like these can be especially challenging for students, as they haven’t yet begun the careers they hoped would provide financial security for themselves or their families. Many worked in industries or positions that experienced early workforce reductions. The government has put a temporary freeze on student loan repayment, which will offer some relief, and many students are eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, however no student-specific financial relief measures have been introduce by government yet.

The Student Connect Centre is the key point of contact for our learners looking for information, resources and support. In the last 30 days, referrals to the Student Food Bank more than tripled over the same period last year, and the Student Connect Centre has provided more than 50 Emergency Bursaries, compared to 10 in the same timeframe in 2019. Our community has rallied around our College to ensure that we can fill that gap in relief. Thank you for your support!
