Don't wait to get your ducks in a row

RDC Alumni Relations and RDC Career Services recognize that mentorship is an integral part of professional development and want to kick start the conversation about what mentorship is all about. Mentorship can come from many life experiences. Simple, unexpected moments can teach you more profound lessons. Actively seeking out "rocket booster" people can help propel you through your career journey. On Wednesday, February 3, we were proud to bring RDC students, alumni and community members together virtually for a key-note presentation. RDC alum Sheila Musgrove (Distinguished Alumnus Award, 2015; Legal Assistant, 1998) explored some of the key themes in her book, Unexpected Mentors.

True to Sheila's message, Wednesday's presentation was a welcomed 'kick in the pants!' Traditional professional mentorship is a gift, and it can be challenging to know where to start looking for these opportunities. Hearing Sheila's take on where one can find inspiration from unexpected mentors inspired us to broaden our view of what mentorship can look like and gave us tools to find and engage traditional mentors. Some of our favourite takeaways?

  • Simple applications with a new perspective have the potential to make waves
  • Being told "no" creates opportunity
  • Have the courage to "just ask"
  • "Just starting" without all "your ducks in a row" is an opportunity in motion.

Thank you, Sheila, for your contributions to RDC students' career development experience!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event and who filled out our post-event survey! Your feedback will help us improve and develop new events and activities to help you take your career to the next level. Congratulations to Melissa, Cathy and Angelica Marie on winning a copy of Sheila's latest book, Unexpected Mentors.

We recognize that mentorship and work-integrated learning are valuable components of professional development, so keep your eye out for more opportunities like this in the future!
