High School Level Upgrading Funding

Alberta Works offers grant funding to adult learners enrolled in high school level upgrading courses. Review the application procedure and eligibility criteria below and contact the Student Connect Centre should you have any questions or require any assistance.

Please note the following questions reflect basic eligibility only. Alberta Works will perform a more elaborate eligibility assessment upon receipt of your application. 

Basic Eligibility: 

  • You must have an Alberta address 
  • You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee 
  • You must be 18+ years old, or be 16-17 and a single parent, legally married, in a cohabitating relationship or pregnant.
  • You must be out of high school for 12 consecutive months or have aged out of high school prior to beginning your Academic Upgrading course(s) 

Additional Requirements for Full-Time Applicants: 

You must not have been working more than 20 hours per week (on average) over the 12 weeks prior to the date you submit your funding application. WARNING: If you are working more than 20 hours per week (on average) during this timeframe, quitting your job in order to attend training will result in fund rejection.  

Please note students are able to receive a maximum of 20 months of full-time Alberta Works upgrading funding.

Additional Requirements for Part-Time Applicants: 

Your family’s (yourself, your spouse/partner and dependent children) combined income from the previous year must be less than the Net Income Threshold below:

checkmarkEnsure you are registered in your upgrading courses

Before applying for funding, you must register in your intended course load. If you will be applying for part-time funding, you must be enrolled in a part-time course load. If you will be applying for full-time funding, you must be enrolled in a full-time course load

Students admitted to the Academic Upgrading program:  

Review the recommended course plan your Academic Advising Specialist emailed you and register in courses accordingly. 

Students admitted to a post-secondary program:  

Register in the upgrading courses required or recommended for your goal program. 

 

checkmarkObtain a certified Training Provider Information Form

An RDC certified Training Provider Information (TPI) form must accompany your Alberta Works funding application. In order to obtain your certified TPI, you must submit a TPI Request Form. After your request is received, your TPI form will be completed by RDC’s Student Connect Centre and returned to you via email. It is your responsibility to ensure the certified TPI form is submitted along with your funding application.

Apply online or apply in writing by printing, completing and mailing the paper application and additional forms. Please use Internet Explorer to access the paper forms. 

IMPORTANT: It is imperative you input the correct Study Period dates (training start and end dates) on your application as per the chart below. Failure to do so will result in processing delays.

Online Applicants:

  1. Please ensure you submit your certified TPI form (see information in the previous step above) along with your online application. 
  2. After completing the online application, proceed to the Next Steps section to complete your Declaration Form and other forms that may be applicable to you. Failure to do so will result in your application being closed.

Paper Applicants:

  1. Please ensure you attach your certified TPI form (see information in the previous step above) to your paper application prior to sending in the mail. 
  2. In addition to the application and TPI form, you may be required to complete other forms. Be sure to review these forms then print, complete and attach them to your application before mailing the completed package to the Alberta Works Learner Income Support Office.  
  3. Applications and additional paperwork are to be mailed to:
